skos:definition """The Southern Maryland Project (SMP) is part of the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) national program developed to assist
communities in becoming disaster-resistant. The Southern Maryland
Region, comprised of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties, was
designated a Project Impact community in 1998 by James Lee Witt, the
director of FEMA. This designation allowed the Region to receive
grant funding of &#36300,000 to establish a Project Impact
Initiative for the Southern Maryland region.

The Southern Maryland Project Impact Initiative is a federal and state
initiative designed to help communities become "disaster
resistant". The Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland coordinates
the project for the region.

The goals include coordination of emergency management, mitigating
against and preparing for disasters, and planning for long-term
partnerships with the community.
