The Office is responsible for, among other things:

-Ensuring the quality and credibility of NMFS' fisheries science
and NMFS' scientific staff

-Development and implementation of NMFS' Long-range Science Strategy;
Coordinating NMFS' domestic science and research programs and activities

-Director of the Office serves as the NMFS Senior Scientist

-Providing scientific analysis and advice for operational,
resource conservation and management decisions, as appropriate,
from a science perspective

-Operation of the National Fisheries Statistics program

-Leadership and management for activities related to the NMFS'
Science Board

-Coordination of NMFS' mission needs and requirements for
research vessels and aircraft

-Monitoring and improving the agency's understanding of global
fisheries to contribute to the development and sound management
of U.S. fisheries

-Advancing U.S. strategic goals for fisheries by the transfer of
appropriate fisheries science and technology to other countries
for the purpose of effectively managing and conserving global
living marine resources; and, Management of NMFS' Scientific
Publications Unit.
